Yes John G. you are correct. As I wrote that I realize my “luck” of not having the mice issue on several cars that the lids are cracked open. No indications of mice present in the garages. The cars were also parked on a plywood base with a plastic barrier between the concrete and plywood to keep moisture from rising up so trunks were dry. For a mouse problem I had heard of tying string parallel to the side of a vehicle a foot from the side and 2-3 feet off the floor. Then tie different lengths of plastic orange marking ribbon to the string some touching the floor. Add a rotating fan to gently move the orange ribbons and the mice thinks that snakes are present. It worked great for a Brother who was in rural Arkansas in a garage that had mice. Now he used mouse traps too to keep them at bay and some bags of mouse away by his tires.
