Great pictures! ...there's a whole type of '50s/60s architecture that's now called Googie that was most prevalent in So Cal but found all over the US... the "Wonder Bowl" postcard was kind of a conservative example, the Googie look generally had lots of boonerangs, starbursts, wild colors, folded or pointed roofs, "forward look" kind of signage, space-age lighting stuff... goes great with our cars! There's several books on it, and you can see eamples by Google-ing Googie ... hey I like that... Google Googie!

For anyone interested (and we all should be, as devotees of all things-50's) in the genre, there are two volumes/editions of the book "Googie: 50's coffee shop achitecture", by Alan Hess (Chronicle Books), altho the earlier one may be out of print, and only available via used book stores.

The books are very well written, & illustrated.

The term "Googie" : "....the detractors [of 50's style Moderne coffee shops & drive-in restaurants] labeled these structures the 'Googie School of Architecture', after a particularly outlandish coffee shop in L.A. .

Googie's was located at the corner of Olive & 5TH, in downtown L.A., and featured a distinctive horizontaly/diagonally banded fascade, with animated- looking "Googie" name-boards, which had the effect of grabbing passers-by attention, like static neon signposts.

The mansard-roof treatments were applied to the ground floor restaurant area, of a 6-story commercial business building. There were extensive glass wall-panels, so that the borders between outside & inside environments became merged.

A companion book is "Populuxe", by Thomas Hine (Knopf), a MUST have, and then there's another ESSENTIAL book (it's a thickee!) "50's All American Ads", by Jim Heimann (Taschen): full-color, and close-up portions of all-things 50's magazine advertisements.

The last (next) book that you should have is "The 50's" by David Halberstam (R.I.P.).

Then, there are: "The Fifties (Photographs of America", by Magnum Photos (Pantheon), "The 1950's", by Edith Horsley" (Domus Books), and Southern California in the 50's", by [good-old FWDLK-maven: ] Charles Phoenix (Angel City Press).

All these books concern the 50's ethos and culture, and do show/discuss finned cars, to varying extents, but their viewpoint is much broader and complete than the books which merely discuss "50's cars".

The term "Googie" was coined by architectural critics after the Googie's coffee shop on Sunset Blvd. at Crescent Heights in LA, designed by John Lautner, built 1949. It was an early glass wall coffee shop that ushered in the era of George Jetson strip styling.

A very interesting collection of postcards indeed! I wish I could go back into that era and buy a couple of loaded MoPars. I wouldn’t want many – just a 1958 DeSoto Adventurer, a 1960 Chrysler New Yorker, a 1960 Dodge Polara wagon, and a 1961 Plymouth Fury. I’m not greedy!

There were a couple of interesting odd sightings too. In the picture Michigan300B, there’s a 1950-51 Shoebox Ford parked in the front rank. It appears to have a custom grille bar as I never saw a stock one that looked like that. Maybe it came from a 1953 Plymouth?

In the picture STL02 the 1959 Plymouth wagon is wearing a US Government license tag. I wonder which government agency thought it needed a wagon, the Post Office maybe?

Boy, this is the wrong thread, to discuss Googie commercial architecture, but I got back out my book, & LO: John Lautner did design the 1st Googie coffee shop, in 1949, at the corner of Sunset Blvd & Crescent Hts, in . L.A.

In 1952, House & Home's architectural editor, Douglas Haskell, with a passenger-witness, drove past Googie's & declared that all such mid-century Modern architecture was henceforth to be called "Googie", and, the term stuck.

The book does not explain why the architectect was changed, but, in 1955, Armet & Davis were hired to design "Googie's Downtown" at the corner of Olive & 5th.

The book does say, of Armet & Davis : "It was the prolific team of Louis Armet & Eldon Davis that established the Coffee Shop Modernn as a major popular modern style. ....enough [buildings] remain, even altered, so that it is the work of Armet & Davis that creates the major physical memory of the style. "

That's actually rust-out, going-on, on that parked Coro.

I just scored a copy of that St Petersburg, FL postcard, and will make an 8x12" digital cropped-copy of it, for matting/framing
in my office, alongside a certain all-blue CRL convertible, that I've done that treatment-to.

Note the dual antennae (mine's got a single-fender mount) and the correct (dammnit) OEM eggshell-painted wheels. My car, too
did not come OEM with spinners, (but he's damm-sure wearing those 'spats', now!)

I believe you are correct; a 1954 Pontiac bumper bar looks closer than a 1953 Plymouth. Rather bland though. The fellow might have made his front end more exciting by using the chrome grille teeth from a 1952-3 DeSoto. It was a common trick back in the 50s.

I enjoyed those last post cards for more than the FL cars. Some of the pictures were taken near my home town in North Dakota, and the hospital is the one where my cousin was head nurse in the oncology ward for over 20 years.

Seeing the pictures of the electric buses really took me back. I will never forget the hot oil/electric smell of them nor the odd electrical motor sound they made when they move off from a stand still. Sort of a "Rrrrrrrrrrrr". I saw and rode mine in Germany.

Looking at these old postcards got me to wondering, "Does anyone still take photos like these." I sincerely doubt it. Now its all techno glitz and special effects. No place for pictures showing things as they are with an eye toward saving a time/place for future viewers. Sad commentary.

I wonder where this motel was in Dover, NJ? Was it on US Hwy 46 or NJ State Route 15? I lived in that area for three years from 1987 to 1990 and I don't remember this place. Nice 56 Plymouth though.

I finally see one Opel Rekord Olympia caught in traffic read that these were imported after '58 recession but so poorly and I never seen one on photo.

Couple observations: Does anyone recognize what kind-year of car is approaching the camara, in the Loveland, CO, downtown-
scene (around the middle of this page) ??---I can't figure it out.

I just won the card, showing the yellow/white CRL D500, in Park Falls, WI.

That coffeeshop, in Ironwood, MI is scarily-seismically deficient, by having its heavy upper living area supported (sort-of!) by
the lower plate glass windows, and without having ANY corner-support, on the left-side, to resist "racking" movement.
And, yeah: Michigan can get earthquakes!

Neil,that one in Loveland CO is a tough one,at first glance I thought it was a 1960 Pontiac ,but on closer inspection I'd say a 1957 Dodge with customised front-end.Here's another one from Ironwood MI during an earthquake(split the town in two)and for FinFan there's also another Opel Olympia Rekord.

Looks like even the basic Rambler DeLuxe had fins taller than the poor Olympia. But European fins rarely went up, usually only sticked out on the end.

These were never officially imported into the United States by VW so it's unlikely it would be one of those. We had a Karmann-Ghia body parts book at our dealership with section devoted to the Type III varient, but we never saw one. The Squareback and the fastback models were the only ones sold officially here and they were only here from 1965 to 1973.

As for the postcard, I can't blow it up enough to tell what kind of car that is facing the camera. My best guess is it might have been a 1960 Pontiac, but there isn't enough resolution in the picture.
